My name is Anthony Jammal but friends call me Tony. As you research for some answers to an aging situation in your life, permit me to share my family’s story in hopes that it will help you along your journey. Before I begin, keep in mind that these trials happened despite the fact that I have a degree and background in social welfare and my parents are both Doctors here in Roseville.
My Grandfather was a produce broker and very active by nature and retirement did not stop him. At home, he fixed everything including climbing on the roof for repairs. After a series of injuries and a surgery that left him with kidney failure his mobility became increasingly limited until he could no longer get around. It was tough on him and it saddened my family because we knew that he couldn’t do the stuff he loved to do. We also worried about our Grandmother, as she was Grandpa’s primary caregiver.
Initially, as a family we tried helping; it worked for a while, but busy schedules worked against us. Like so many in Grandma’s situation, she refused outside help and her health began to suffer. Then, it happened just as we feared, she fractured her back from lifting him so much! They needed professional help and it felt like we were a little too late.
We helped Grandpa research options. He considered an independent or contracted caregiver but did not want the risk of liability; so, he hired a local agency. After Grandpa passed, we tried several companion options for grandma from independent caregivers to home care agencies, to friends – never knowing whom to trust and some we most certainly shouldn’t have! Life was an exhausting trial and error. Aging is complicated and made more difficult with unreliable options!
